This position is only available to those who have excelled in the police force and are worthy to hold this title.
If you want to enter the police force, you have to start somewhere .You must start off as a Police officer then work your way up. Your first post after finishing at the Police Academy is to be a probationary police officer. You will be under the supervision of another police officer who has already served his probationary period. Your duties will include responding to radio calls form citizens, responding to the scene of the crime, monitoring vehicle traffic and suspicious behavior. These are a few duties you will be required to do ,in addition to this ,you may be required to work undercover, perhaps in the narcotics division ,or undercover at a school etc. You may also be asked to maintain order on the roads by keeping an eye on traffic congestion and maintaining harmony between drivers.
The rank of Detective is where you will move to once completing your service as a police officer. A detectiveâ€™s primary function is to investigate the scene of the crime, to follow up investigations, compile reports on findings, and question possible witnesses and suspects alike. Once youâ€™ve undergone the above, you may be required to ask to specialize in certain fields and oversee new detectives. You may be asked to get involved in cases such as theft, robbery, narcotics, illegal sex crimes etc.
A police sergeantâ€™s job description is mainly to lead and direct, guides and provides support to the police officers assigned to his watch, examine and makes sure that all equipment used in the department meet quality standards. He is also responsible for training staff. He is the communication bridge between the upper management in the police for and the police officers. He may also be called to testify in court. Sergeants should also be able to apply force when the time comes, by this I mean arresting and subduing criminals and using weapons. The minimum requirement for becoming a sergeant is 5 years continued service in the police force as a police officer or cadet.
There are many challenges involved in learning how to become a police officer. You have to go through the different ranks; one of the higher ranks is a Police Lieutenant. This is more of a supervisory position much like a sergeantâ€™s job. He has to watch over police officers, check equipment to make sure they comply with safety standards, interview civilian personnel. He also has the responsibility of doing training sessions at the police academy etc. The lieutenant must take charge at the scene of a crime and prepare all reports for the review of the Captain.
